What it is: VMAP is a statewide program that helps medical providers care for the mental health of infants, children, adolescents, young adults, and pregnant and postpartum people. It gives primary care providers education, consultation, and care navigation so they can manage milder behavioral health needs and reserve specialists for more complex ones.
How it works: The VMAP Line offers free mental health consultation to Virginia primary care, maternal health, and other clinicians who treat pediatric patients ages 0 to 21 and perinatal patients. Calls reach regional hubs staffed by child and adolescent psychiatrists, developmental behavioral specialists, and licensed mental health providers. There's a separate early childhood line for patients 5 and under, and a VMAP for Moms+ line for perinatal patients.
Education: The program also runs pediatric and perinatal mental health trainings, with continuing education credit, open to Virginia primary care providers at low or no cost.

VMAP is another program that does two jobs at once, covering both child and perinatal access under one line, which puts it alongside New York's Project TEACH. Its separate early childhood and perinatal lines are a nice detail: they recognize that a question about a five-year-old and a question about a postpartum patient need different specialists. Backed by the state's behavioral health department and the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation, it's both the Virginia primary-care access and reproductive and maternal mental health entry for the Atlas.
