What this guide is
This guide organizes the profession's training layer in one place. Two parts sit under it. The first is plain, evergreen explanation of how psychiatry residency works and how to apply, which you can read in the guide to applying to psychiatry residency. The second is a verified directory of ACGME-accredited psychiatry programs, built one program at a time to the inclusion criteria below.
We're publishing the standards, the methodology, and the correction process first, before any program profiles go live. That order is deliberate. It's how a directory earns trust, and it's what the network's governance standard requires. Verified program profiles and state pages publish in reviewed batches after this.
How each program profile is built
Every profile, once published, separates three kinds of information, and labels which is which. That separation is the point. It lets you trust what's verified and weigh what's self-reported.
Verified structured facts
Official program name, sponsoring institution, city and state, program type, training length, ACGME program identifier and accreditation status, publicly reported positions, program director, official website, and a last-verified date. Checked against official sources, not repeated from other directories.
Program-reported characteristics
Curriculum by year, therapy training, rotation sites, tracks, and electives, drawn from the program's own official website and labeled plainly: reported by the program and last reviewed on a stated date. We don't dress self-description up as independent verification.
shrinkiatry context
Editorial context a reader can use: what appears distinctive, the training environment and populations served, nearby fellowships, and regional workforce or cost-of-living context from cited public sources. Clearly editorial, and clearly separate from the two layers above.
Inclusion criteria
These are published so anyone can hold the guide to them. A program is eligible when it is:
- an ACGME-accredited psychiatry residency, or one formally in the accreditation process;
- a real program at an identifiable sponsoring institution;
- publicly documentable, so its core facts can be verified against official sources;
- describable without clinical-quality claims we cannot defend.
Submission does not guarantee inclusion. Editorial judgment and verification apply to every entry. There is never any payment for inclusion or for position, and no listing can be bought.
What this guide will not do
Some things stay off the table because they mislead. We don't attach labels like best, easiest, most competitive, IMG-friendly, malignant, or good work-life balance, because those need defensible definitions and reliable evidence, not vibes. We don't copy FREIDA, Residency Explorer, or any other directory verbatim; a profile has to add verified, organized information of its own. We don't rank programs by quality. And we don't let advertising, sponsorship, or referral relationships touch what gets listed or where.
Badges and notifications
After a program profile is published, we notify the program with a correction link and an optional badge. The badge says exactly what happened, “Listed in the Shrinkiatry Psychiatry Residency Guide,” and nothing more. It is not an endorsement, an award, or a ranking, and it never implies one.
Corrections
Every published profile carries a correction link, and program facts change, so we re-verify on a schedule and date what we check. If something is wrong or out of date, tell us on the submission and correction form and we'll fix it and log it.
Where the guide stands today
The standards, methodology, application guide, and correction process are live now, and the first verified program profiles are publishing. The rest are being assembled from official sources in reviewed batches. We would rather publish a smaller number of fully verified profiles than a large number of thin ones.
