What it is
Cal-MAP is a statewide behavioral health eConsult service that gives pediatricians, primary care physicians, and other practitioners access to consultation from licensed behavioral health professionals, including psychiatrists. Its team of psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers provides no-cost consultation, education, and resource navigation for providers caring for young people ages 0 to 25.
How it started
California's Department of Health Care Services launched Cal-MAP in December 2024, in partnership with the University of California, San Francisco Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Program. It's an expansion of UCSF's earlier CAPP program, which began in 2019 and served Northern and Central California before going statewide.
How to use it
The program says providers can enroll at its website or by phone, and that it focuses on reaching California's underserved and rural communities. It also offers continuing education, including ECHO learning collaboratives and webinars.

Cal-MAP is California's entry into the child psychiatry access model that CPAN, Project TEACH, GMAP, and Be Happy represent in other states, and it's a recent one: the country's most populous state went statewide with a single portal only at the end of 2024. That timing is part of why it matters. It shows the access-line model is still spreading, and it gives every California pediatrician one no-cost place to reach a child psychiatrist. For the Atlas, it's the California primary-care access entry.
