What it is

The New York State Office of Mental Health offers primary care practices a way to implement the Collaborative Care model and receive Medicaid reimbursement for it. In this model, primary care is enhanced with care management for patients in behavioral health treatment and regular consultation with a prescribing psychiatric provider.

How it works

Practices apply to the Office of Mental Health and must be accepted into the Collaborative Care Medicaid Program before they can bill the Medicaid rates. The state also provides technical assistance, including one-on-one coaching, staff training, and help with billing, through the New York Center for the Advancement of Behavioral Health Integration.

New York was the first state in the country to offer Medicaid reimbursement for Collaborative Care services.
