Reported by the program

The program describes the following on its official information, reviewed on July 29, 2026.

What it is
CPPPH works to develop and maintain physician health resources in California, promoting physician wellness and coordinating services for physicians dealing with mental health conditions, physical illness, and substance use. Much of its work supports the wellbeing committees at hospitals and medical groups that help clinicians who are struggling.
Who formed it
CPPPH was formed in 2009 by organizations with a long involvement in physician health, including the California Society of Addiction Medicine, the California Psychiatric Association, the California Medical Association, and the California Hospital Association.
The California gap
The organization notes that California is one of the states without a statewide physician health program. It reports that efforts to change that gained ground with a May 2024 decision by the Medical Board of California to seek legislation authorizing one.

shrinkiatry context

California is the exception worth naming in this Atlas. Most states run a single confidential physician health program, often through the medical society, but California has operated for years without a statewide one, after ending an earlier diversion program in 2008. CPPPH is what fills part of that space, supporting the well-being committee infrastructure while the state works toward an authorized program. For the Atlas, it's the California physician and clinician mental health entry, and it's a reminder that this safety net isn't uniform across the country.
